2014's #yearontwitter

// // Leave a Comment

The globe sends out more than 500 million tweets a day (just in case your arithmetic is as slow as mine that amounts to more than 1,8 TRILLION tweets this year alone) and today the Twitter gods smile down on us to reveal the twitterverse’s #yearontwitter. Besides taking us on a wonderfully nostalgic virtual trip down memory lane, the report provides some fascinating insight into what the globes big moments have meant to the users of twitter, the second largest social media network on the web but the fastest growing social media site in S.A with 5.5 million active monthly users.

Sport fans tweet all the way to the top

The biggest moment on twitter this year? The #FIFAWorldCup soared to the top of the ladder with a record breaking 672 million tweets worldwide. South Africa joined the worlds sports crazed supporters in SA’s biggest twitter moment for 2014 when they tweeted the nail-biting semi-final match between Germany and Brazil.

The second biggest twitter moment for the local twitterites was the #SSRugby match between Wales and South Africa followed closely by the riveting court proceedings of the nations fallen sports hero in the #oscarpistoriustrial

The Golden Tweet

Twitter annually awards the years most re-tweeted tweet with ‘The Golden Tweet’ prize (that’s a lot of tweet in one sentence). This years golden tweet goes to American talk-show queen Ellen Degeneres whose iconic Academy Award selfie broke the all time record when it peaked at more than 3 million retweets. Ellens selfie was followed by Justin Biebers ‘believe’ tweet and One Direction’s Nial Horans four-year fan tweet. They both peaked at just under 500 000 re-tweets, miles behind Ellens selfie.
